WHAT IS CHORO COLLECTIVE?

Choro Collective is a collaboration of professional musicians promoting Brazilian choro music in Sydney. Our members have been playing choro in Australia since the 1990s and come from diverse musical backgrounds including traditional choro, samba, bossa nova, jazz, classical, and popular music. Choro Collective’s mission is to share choro’s rich musical traditions with the Australian public and welcome new musicians interested in learning choro into our community.

Choro groups

Choro Collective is comprised of many Sydney musicians from a variety of different Brazilian choro performing groups. We believe in working cooperatively to share choro’s rich traditions with the wider Australian community. We welcome musicians who would like to learn the genre and share in its beauty.

Choro Performances

Our live performances are similar but different from a roda de choro mainly due to the formal nature of the show. A roda is more of a relaxed and open atmosphere with musicians rotating in and out, where as a live performance will usually be a programmed set list with a specific group of musicians.

Rodas de choro

A “roda de choro” (jam session) is a gathering where musicians play choro. The atmosphere is relaxed and communal, often taking place in informal settings like restaurants, bars, and cafes or parks. It’s a celebration of musical skill, tradition, and camaraderie amongst both players and listeners. New musicians welcome.

Choro venues

If you’re a bar or restaurant owner or manager and looking for professional musicians that can enhance your venue’s atmosphere, choro provides just the right ambiance for people to enjoy the music without having to scream across the table for a chat.
